Volkswagen is expanding its R Line of visual and chassis enhancements, which already is available on the Beetle convertible, the Tiguan and the Touareg, and the CC. The brand has unveiled three R Line packages for the European-market Golf MkVII, each of which add a healthy dose of sportiness to the mid-level Comfortline and the top-shelf Highline trims. Remarkably, the packages have their own character rather than turning the car into little more than a poor man’s GTI.
The R Line Sport package includes darkened rear side windows and backlight, a sports suspension, and the GTI’s progressive power steering, which changes its ratio according to the steering angle. This feature provides a go-kart-like feeling, and is a major improvement over an already laudable electric-power-steering system. VW also offers an R Line Interior package, which comes in dark hues and includes goodies such as sports seats, aluminum-look decor, and stainless-steel door-sill panels and pedals.
